Hyundai and Fiat do not get close to competing with each other until and unless it gets to the crossover segment. Hyundai sells the i20 Active while the Italian carmaker sells the Avventura and Avventura Urban Cross. The Urban Cross came in later and was a direct competitor to the likes of the i20 Active. Today, we take a look at these two on paper and tell you which one is a better deal.

The Fiat Urban Cross is straight forward the better looking car here. Things like the unique front grille, pulled back headlamps, LED taillights, 16-inch Scorpion alloy wheels and generous body cladding make it look stylish. The car also gets faux silver skid plates at the front and rear, Avventura badging on the door and the rear bumper panel and silver roof rails too. The Punto Evo itself is quite a looker and the raised stance of the Urban Cross makes it look even more attractive. Ground clearance is rated at 205mm.

Hyundai on the other hand have even done a good job with the i20 Active when it comes to styling. The car gets body cladding all over and roof rails too, to begin with. The Hyundai i20 Active also offers up projector headlamps with LED DRLs, chrome door handles and a blacked out C-pillar that the Fiat does not offer. Top variants get 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels that add up to the look of the car. The i20 Active does look modern when compared to the Urban Cross but overall we would pick the latter if only design was the prime parameter. The i20 Active gets 190mm of ground clearance.

The Fiat Urban Cross is based on the Punto hatchback and therefore shares the interior with it. The car had received a mid-life facelift which introduced an all new dashboard. Quality is respectable for this class and you do get a few frills too. There is a central touchscreen infotainment system on offer but only on the top spec variant. There is also climate control AC on offer and soft touch materials on the dashboard to make it look premium. The dashboard and seats can be had in a red shade that makes the interior feel sporty and aggressive. Boot space stands at 280 litres.

The Hyundai i20 Active again shares its interiors with the Elite i20 but in a bid to make it look unique the company has given orange highlights on the AC vents, gear knob and the seats. The dashboard too can be had with a blue shade. Initially, the i20 Active did not receive a touchscreen infotainment system but the company has indeed introduced one recently given increasing competition. Quality on the dashboard is better than that of the Fiat and fit and finish too feels premium. Oh and did we mention to mention it gets a rear AC vent too!

Engine, Gearbox & Safety:

The Fiat Urban Cross is offered with two engine options – 1.3-litre diesel and a 1.4-litre T-Jet petrol. The 1.3-litre diesel engine is the widely known mill that powers many cars from Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors. The engine develops 90 PS of max power and 200 Nm of max torque. The 1.4-litre T-Jet petrol motor is the fantastic motor that also powers the Abarth Punto. It develops 140 PS of max power and 210 Nm of max torque. Both engines are mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The diesel Urban Cross delivers a fuel efficiency of 20 kmpl while the petrol delivers 17.1 kmpl under standard testing conditions. Sfatey features like 2 airbags and ABS are offered on the top spec trim only.

The Hyundai i20 Active is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol motor and a 1.4-litre diesel motor. The petrol motor develops 82 PS and 114 Nm. The diesel on the other hand is much more stronger at 90 PS and 220 Nm. The petrol engine comes mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox while the diesel comes with a 6-speed manual unit. Fuel efficiency on the petrol i20 Active stands at 17.19 kmpl while the diesel delivers 21.19 kmpl under standard tests. The car gets ABS and 6 airbags on the top spec variant while lower models get 2 airbags instead of 6.

The Fiat Urban Cross is a capable product on paper. But the Punto itself is showing its age. The car misses out on a few features as compared to the Hyundai and wont even get you as much resale value in the long term. The Hyundai i20 Active on the other hand has its weak points too. The car isn’t as good looking as the Fiat but it definitely has the better interior. It comes out as the better more modern product here.
