After having driven the Tata Nexon for our test review, I really had not had an encounter with the Compact SUV until now. The Tata Nexon Diesel XZ+ was inducted in our long term test fleet about a couple of months back, and now after living with it for a considerable amount of time, I am in a position to let you know my ownership experience (long term) with it.

First things first, the Nexon is the first Compact SUV coming from Tata Motors, and there is no denying that this model is a big hit from day one with huge sales and good demand. The XZ+ that I drove was the top end, fully loaded Diesel manual variant in the bright blue shade with silver top and ivory white inserts, which Tata Motors calls as the Moroccan Blue shade.

The Tata Nexon has been a part of my day to day activities and infact I have developed an all love relationship with it. No doubt, the Nexon is an extremely catchy looking vehicle; you can just not miss it on the road if it passes you by. The unique and different styling makes it stand apart from other compact SUVs. The Ivory white body inserts around the windows, the boot and on the front bumpers make it look a lot more different.

Then you have the quirky-looking projector headlights with DRL and bulging LED tail lights which complete the unique and different styling with the “into your face” family Tata grille. I just loved the chunky 215/60R16 spec Goodyear Excellence tyres mounted on dualtone 5-spoke alloys along with the plastic cladding around the bulging muscular fenders and running board that complete the brute SUV look. The roof-rails and shark-fin antenna not only look good but also make the Nexon look a bit taller.

On the inside what impressed me on the Nexon was its generous cabin space, excellent and supportive seats and a hawk-eye view from the driver’s seat. The rear seats are super comfy and come with folding arm-rest and adjustable headrest, loved the height adjustable seatbelts, loads of headroom, legroom, best in class audio system from Harman, touchscreen infotainment unit, plenty of storage bins and cubby holes, including an umbrella holder in the door pad, XXL sized glovebox which can swallow your tabs and iPads.

The rear AC vents with blower setting is a big boon for rear passengers with summer setting in. The rear passengers also get an charging port to enhance comfort and convenience. The boot space is a humongous 350 liters which came handy during my trips to D-Mart for monthly household stuff, also during my trips to Pune and to the airport to pick a relative, the Nexon’s boot swallowed all with ease, not forgetting the ultra wide loading area.

On the drive side, the Tata Nexon did not fail to impress me with its peppy power delivery and impressive torque from the 1.5L Turbocharged motor with 110PS of power and 260Nm of torque. I simply love the way the gear shifts precisely with a unique click feel to it. The clutch feels light and that aids long drives along with the dead pedal in place. The steering is well weighted for city and highway use both. Also liked the Multi-Drive modes (City, Eco, Sport) though the Eco mode was mostly used to further extend the already good mileage that the Nexon was driving at. The ride quality is excellent with amazingly tuned suspension setup in place. Overall, an extremely positive drive feel. With a 44 litre fuel tank the Nexon can do intercity trips with super ease.

Not much against the Tata Nexon, except for maybe the plastic quality could be a bit better. Apart from this, the Tata Nexon has not failed to impress us highly during the period it is with us. It is perfect in size to drive and park in traffic, the cabin is very comfortable and the overall visibility is very good. The Nexon comes loaded with a long list of safety features.

The Tata Nexon is an extremely trendy, reliable, fuel efficient and comfortable workhorse if you are out there looking for an trendy, safe, feature loaded Compact SUV. The Tata Nexon has also received 5-stars from Global NCAP for its crash test rating, making it one of the safest cars in the country, which should be the icing on the cake!
