Ferrari has been working hard lately to make its engines more future ready and up to date. The first move was to introduce turbocharging but now electric assistance on the Ferrari’s V8 and V12 range of engines is currently underway. While the 12 cylinder is not likely to get the ‘turbo’ treatment, the naturally aspirated V12 will survive in non turbo form but will have electrification technology incorporated into it. In fact, Ferrari is planning to electrify its entire range of engines.
Ferrari’s latest hybrid system called as KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) employs a new type of battery pack that has individual cells networked together. This system allows for better heat dissipation and aids in better cooling. And the safety net is higher as well, as the entire pack can be disconnected automatically to prevent a short, say after an accident. Also, the major difference between the KERS tech available in LaFerrari and this one is that the system can function as a full electric for a limited number of kilometers.The focus of this electric system, however, is not fuel efficiency but improved performance.
Ferrari is also planning to introduce a hybrid version of its award winning twin turbo V8. While we do not have any information currently regarding the specifications and type of the battery pack to be employed, reports indicate that Ferrari could use three motors, one in the rear and two in the front.
The setup should be very similar to that of the Honda NSX, where a single powerful 75 HP electric motor sits in between the engine and dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This won’t be the only electric motor. There are likely to be a pair of less powerful ones up front as well. This can only mean that the 488 replacement could have some sort of all-wheel-drive system. However, we do not know whether the system will find its way into a regular series production model or not.
