Uber introduces Bike Taxi in Chandigarh, Fare starts at Rs. 20/-

While Uber is teaming up with global manufacturers for autonomous vehicles, the company here in India has launched a bike taxi service in the city of Chandigarh. The services will extend to Mohali as well. UberMOTO as it is widely known as, also operates in Gurgaon, Bengaluru, Pune and Hyderabad. In Bengaluru though the company had to shut service as they did not receive the necessary permits to operate in the city. Fares start at Rs. 20/- for the first 3 kilometres, followed by Rs. 5/km. Uber is aiming to provide last mile transportation facilities with the help of UberMOTO.

UberMOTO competes with many such bike taxi startups in India like Rapido, Gurgaon-based Bikxie, Baxi and M-Taxi. This service is rather popular in south east Asia where companies like Singapore based GrabTaxi and Indonesia’s GO-Jek are big names in this field. According to experts UberMOTO will help the company largely improve its customer base due to the lower price points. In Hyderabad, UberMOTO has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Hyderabad Metro Rail PVT LTD to extend its last mile services when the Metro launches there.

To use the Uber Bike Taxi service in Chandigarh all you have to do is download the Uber app, select UberMOTO and enter your location. The driver details will be sent to your phone along with his photo and bike registration number. After taking the ride, the customer can either pay via cash, debit/credit card or mobile wallet. Something that is mandatory for all passenger riders is wearing a helmet, in accordance with the law. This trend is sure going to catch up very soon and could be more popular in Tier II and Tier III cities of India.
