Since its launch in 2009, Toyota Fortuner has been a strong performer in the Rs.20-25 lakh segment. The spartan interiors based on Innova, truck like handling and the iffy brakes did not deter many from plunging their money into the SUV which still command an excellent resale value. With the launch of the next-gen model which addresses many of the older generation Fortuner’s shortcomings, the sales have seen an all time high with 2000 units of the SUV getting dispatched to the dealers last month. Offered with a choice of both petrol and diesel engines, the Toyota Fortuner SUV now commands a waiting period of 3 months.

The petrol engine options of the new Toyota Fortuner starts at INR 26.81 lakhs for the 4×2 MT and retails at INR 28.51 lakhs for the 4×2 AT. The diesel variants are priced at INR 28.41 lakhs for the 4×2 MT and goes upto INR 32.02 lakhs for the 4×4 AT, all prices ex-showroom, Delhi.

Based on the new Hilux pickup truck chassis, the Toyota Fortuner is built on a ladder frame platform. The SUV does not hide its ‘derived from a truck’ genes with its massive size, generous ground clearance and a butch attitude. The excellent approach and departure angles, heavy duty suspension and the 4×4 transfer case ensures the SUV can attend any party in any terrain uninvited.

Powering the towering SUV is a new 2.8 litre diesel , down from the earlier 3.0 litre which powered the previous generation. The new oil burner produces 177 bhp of peak power and a 450 Nm of torque. This time around, Toyota is also offering the SUV with a 2.7 litre petrol engine generating 164 bhp and 250 Nm of torque.

Both the fuel options are available in manual and automatic transmissions while the 4×4 drive system is restricted only to the diesel.
